ABOUT JOHAN AGEBJÖRN & LONEY DEAR - THE LEFTOVERS
Lund-based Swedish producer Johan Agebjörn works in a range of electronic genres, from electro-disco and house to ambient and neoclassical, but always grounds his approach in a deep appreciation for the roots and history of electronic music. He is best known as the songwriter and producer behind the anonymous synth pop chanteuse Sally Shapiro, whose acclaimed 2006 LP Disco Romance was a deliberate, verisimilar throwback to the Italo-disco of the early '80s. His fifth solo album Notes (2015) is based around the electric piano sound of the Casio MT-52 and is a blend of his interests in electonic dance music and ambient/neoclassical. The album received critical acclaim from heavyweight publications such as Uncut (8/10) and DJ Magazine (9/10), the latter who called it "captivating almost beyond belief".
Emil Svanängen in more known as his musical alter ego Loney Dear. Hailing from the small city of Jonkoping, Sweden, Svanängen first began recording homemade, overdubbed tapes of delicate, folkish indie pop (with shades of acts like Belle & Sebastian, Neutral Milk Hotel, and the Magnetic Fields) in the early 2000s. As Loney, Dear, Svanängen self-released three homemade CD-Rs through his website: River Fontana Redux, Citadel Band, and Solange. As buzz developed through MP3 blogs and other new media manifestations, Sub Pop offered Svanängen a contact in 2006. The first proper Loney, Dear album, Loney, Noir, was released in early 2007, as Svanängen put together a full-band lineup of the group for his first international tour. Dear John arrived in 2009, followed by Hall Music in 2011, the latter of which found the multi-instrumentalist mining even more ornate instrumentation, inspired by recent tours with various orchestras in Sweden.
THE TRACK "LEFTOVERS"
The Leftovers, the collaboration between Johan Agebjörn and Loney Dear, appears on Johan's album Notes and is one of the most loved songs on the album. Revolving around a hypnotic dark piano loop, an acoustic haunting bassline and a lonely tom, Emil adds a sensitive and pensive vocal, perfectly accompanying the dark instrumental. First hailed by blogs such as The Line of Best Fit and Stereogum, AllMusic called it an "aching nocturnal ballad" and a standout whereas DJ Mag likened it to "Erlend Øye on Kompakt".
